John C. Trever was a fellow at the American School of Oriental Research in Jerusalem in 1947 when some scrolls were brought to him for evaluation, making him the first American scholar to ever see one of the Dead Sea Scrolls. In those early years, he photographed, copied, and studied many of the scrolls and participated in archaeological excavations in the Judeaen desert. He holds a Ph.D. from Yale University, and has written several books, including: The Untold Story of Qumran, Scrolls from Qumrân Cave I, and Cradle of Our Faith. He taught for many years at Baldwin-Wallace College and then served as director of the Dead Sea Scrolls Project at the Claremont School of Theology.
