Up One Level

Hermann Gunkel was one of the giants molding the modern discipline of biblical studies. He received the first of his many graduate degrees from Göttingen in 1888. He taught at Halle, Berlin, and Giessen. He published numerous books and articles and was the first editor of Die Religion in Geschichte und Gegenwart. He died on March 11, 1932. Gunkel is known as the founder of form criticism and his works on Genesis and Psalms are still the starting point for biblical scholars in those specialties.
