Shemaryahu Talmon

| Shemaryahu Talmon is the J. L. Magnes
Professor, Emeritus, of the Department of Bible Studies at The Hebrew University of
Jerusalem. He earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in Hebrew Bible from the Hebrew University. He has
also taught at Leeds University in England, Tel Aviv College, Tel Aviv University, Harvard
University, Brandeis University, Haifa University, the University of California at
Berkeley, Hochscule für Jüdische Studien in Heidelberg, The Johns Hopkins University,
Vanderbilt University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Wisconsin. He
has served as a dean at several of these institutions. He has held several positions of
national and international importance including being a former supervisor of the
Department of Education for the Jewish National Council of Palestine, the Secretary
General of the Second World Congress of Jewish Studies, the Chairman of the Bible section
of the Third World Congress, the co-chairman of the Israel Interfaith Association, a
member of the Israel Planning Committee, a chairman of the Israel Committee for
Jewish-Christian Relations, and is now a member of the Committee on the Dead Sea Scrolls
of the Israel Antiquities Authority.
He is currently an editor of the Hebrew University Bible Project and is a member of the
editorial committee of several major scholarly journals.
His scholarship, numerous articles and books have had a major impact on modern biblical
scholarship. |
